Should We Teach Children Black History 365 Days of the Year?

DeCarla Burton’s Blog

While black history is celebrated during the month of February, I realize
that our history cannot be shared in 30 days. It should be celebrated and
discussed all year long. However, it is beneficial to use the month of
February to emphasize the important contributions Black Americans have
made.
It is equally important to begin teaching history to children as young as 2
years old. Our pre-school program uses simple jingles and poems to teach
history facts. They sing, dance, and feel the energy of our past heroes as
we celebrate famous black Americans.
Reading books that instill pride, celebrate uniqueness, and teach children
to love themselves is an important component to a rich history
environment. Black History provides a platform to encourage leadership,
courage, perseverance, love, and tolerance. It prepares children to become
visionaries and change agents, that are not afraid to challenge the status
quo to make the world a better place.
